Windsor’s Visiting TALL SHIPS

The Sorlandet

Location: Windsor – Dieppe Gardens
The Sorlandet
Ship Information
The Sorlandet was built as a schoolship for the merchant marine in 1927 in Kristiansand, Norway, and served this purpose up until 1974. She was named Sorlandet, meaning ‘the Southland’, after the southern region of Norway of which Kristiansand is the capital. Thousands of young men have received their first seagoing experience onboard the Sorlandet. During the war, the German occupation force took her undercommand and she was used as a recreation ship for German U-boat crew. Later she was used as a prison camp for Russian prisoners of war. During one of the many air-raids, she sunk in the Kirkenes Bay far up North in Norway with only her masts above water. She was later brought afloat and towed back to her homeport heavily damaged. In 1947 she was restored and once again able to welcome young cadets. In the early seventies the Government of Norway had different ideas on how to educate young seamen and the schoolship era in Norway came to an end. A new administrative organization was established which offers people of all ages a tall ship experience as paying rainees for short or longer trips.
